Dihital Clicks... (2 Viewers)

de-clicker filter!!
sounds dubious...
will that end up cutting out a lot of the high end frequensies, thus us not being our crispy selves...

I did some messing meself with this...for I also have the odd spurious click turning up on stuff. You can go in and edit the waveform and just take the click out, if necessary. It's generally pretty obvious where the click is; it's usually a big jump in the waveform. I found that if you smoothed it out you could hear a slight, um, I dunno, a slight glitch of some sort (because you're changing the waveform slightly), but only if you were really listening for it. Something to fall back on if all else fails. Since you're just doing it in the place where the click is you're not going to ruin high-end frequencies in general or anything like that. Although I suppose you can probably run a de-clicker just on the area where the click is (but then it might be obvious where the de-clicker kicks in if it removes high-end frequencies). Also (haven't tried this meself either yet), it might be possible to actually cut a small portion around the click in such a way as to get the waveform before and after to match up with itself - if it's only a tiny portion you're removing it shouldn't affect the rhythm unduly, I'd wager.

To go back to the start a little ... is the idea to keep seperate tracks on the Roland as still-seperate tracks on the PC? Or are you kinda mixing 'em down as you transfer them?

Yeah - if you're transferring individual tracks it's probably easier (i.e. less noticeable in the final mix) to remove the clicks on them.

Here, from sospubs... Did you look at it like I told you? ;)

We read with interest Paul Lennon's letter, in July's SOS, about audio clicks resulting from MIDI data. We had -- still have, to be honest -- this problem in our studio. The clicks are leakage of MIDI data into an audio line. To solve a cabling problem we put MIDI down two separate unbalanced cores buried in a floor and simply connected them to the DIN plugs either end -- yes, we know it's bad practice, but needs must. The clue is the mod and pitch-bend noise. As they are continuous controllers, they send a series of clicks as you move them. The actual MIDI stream is also audible as a low-level buzz. What seems to happen is that the initial burst of setup data at the start of each sequenced track fires off very quickly and creates a loud 'zip' sound first, with the more gentle amounts of MIDI data used for the song being masked, to a certain degree, by the sounds themselves.

Moral of the tale -- keep MIDI and audio very, very separate.

i've a Yamaha RM1x. Midi Sound module cum sequencer. If i record an empty track wif pitch bends or indeedy any constantly changing controller data (and not even any note data), i can hear very light clicks, through headphones plugged straight into the unit.
it's not midi time code messages, but the actual individual clicks coming from each and every midi message sent out to the module.

sometimes you can't even separate midi and audio enough. which is a shitter.
