David Bickley

Born into a musical family in Manchester 1961, David Bickley began experimenting with tape machines, primitive electronics and film at the age of 14. At the age of 16 he directed a short film for the BBC and his degree film won 1st prize at the Sony Film Festival. This dual interest of images and music/sound has stayed with him through the years and has also spawned the twin headed monster that is his repertoire of ambient art installations including “Loop” live music performance/ projection/ lighting with Cork DJ's Greg Dowling/Shane Johnson, “Labyrinth” Single screen audio/visual piece with German ambient godfather Hans Joachim Roedelius and “1893” Multi-screen audio/visual installation part of “Eist” with eminent sound artists William Furlong & Slavek Kwi.
In Ireland David is best know for creating the group Hyper[borea] which pioneered the fusion of Celtic music with dance idioms back in 1993 long before everyone else jumped on the wagon. HB's work has always been critically acclaimed: "GAELACTICA is an interesting place for Irish music, and HYPER[BOREA] come highly commended for daring to interrogate and invigorate wildly divergent stylings in the multi-cultural light of a new century” HOT PRESS - and as such David was seen as a pioneer of electronic music in Ireland (not a lot happening in those early days!) the classic “SERPENTINE”, which featured such luminaries as MAIRE BREATNAC and DIESEL, and went on to win the coveted Dance Act and Album of the Year awards in the HOT PRESS HEINEKEN AWARDS in Belfast. A mini album and a couple of vinyl releases later and London based GLOBAL FUSION started spreading the seeds across America with “TEN YEARS UNDER THE EARTH”. HYPER[BOREA] have played The HEINEKEN GROOVE WEEKENDER, The ONE WORLD FESTIVAL, and BBC MUSIC LIVE (with JAH WOBBLE).
TOM GREEN who has worked with THE ORB and with his own projects, ANOTHER FINE DAY andSTRANGE ATTRACTOR has been a constant collaborator and continues to work with David on both live and recorded projects.
Live David's work really leaps off the page - "if they can deliver such a rewarding experience with little more than an hour set, rest assured they are capable of melting any dance floor." John Lane, The Irish Times.
Last year David played the Big Chill and had 4 of his films also screened in the media tent.
