Medea
Medea is a Dublin based three-piece comprising of Edel Coffey (guitar and vocals), Mary Carton (bass and vocals) and Lynn Millar (drums). Since they formed in 2003 they have developed a sparse, melodic sound which has been likened to bands such as Joy Division, The Breeders and Sleater-Kinney. All three women share songwriting duties and are due to release their first album at some as yet unspecified future date. Medea have played several gigs throughout Ireland in the last year, including an IMRO showcase and a set at Dublin Ladyfest where they were praised for their quality sound and engaging stage presence. In January the band was hailed by Hot Press as one to watch out for in 2005. "There's an insistent brooding quality about the Medea sound, that's leavened with shafts of light and beauty" Niall Stokes, Hot Press

Spook of the Thirteenth Lock
The Spook is Allen from Holy Ghost Fathers/ Ballroom of Romance. Named after a poem about a haunted canal lock, the Spook plucks banjos and twangs guitars. He yelps, drones and hums songs about dead revolutionaries, partisans and haunted cobblestone streets. Live the Spook plays solo with guitar banjo and effects or as a band with Enda Bates aka Fairlights (bass), and with Donnchadh Hoey (gutiar) and Brian O'Higgins (drums) both of the late great Steerage

I didnt see spook of the thirteenth lock but I did Medea and Dae Kim.

Dae KIm were quite good in parts but lacked a bit of stage prescene and the singer lost it near the end with his " come on humour me a bit ,I know werè not shite " quote. Its his job to humour us thats what we paid in for.In truth they were probbaly frustrated that only about two men and a dog were taking in their set with any great notice.

They could learn a thing or two from Medea who captured the imagination of most there.Oozing with charm and stage presence this tight three piece went down well. They didnt name most of their songs but they all were delivered excellently even if one or two needed to be fine tuned.

At one stage a happy drunk approached them in between songs asking for some Bon Jovi ! Rather than reacting negatively they joined in the banter with him and brought a smile to our faces. The Drummer was top notch while Edel looked to me slightly more of a Natural front woman than Mary.

agreed on the medea bit, spook were deadly too
it was weird when dae kim were on though - what few-ish people were there seemed too back off big time
however, i've been in the situation where there's a "big nothing" in front of the stage and it can be frustrating
great fun afterwards, twas a bit mental
