Hullo all,

Just letting you know that we've a lovely shape note singing group just after starting in Cork city. We meet every Wednesday evening and sing from the Sacred Harp from 7-9pm. It's €4 weekly.

Here is some info for those unfamiliar with, or curious about, shape note singing...

For any Harry Smith/Alan Lomax/ nerds who'd be into singing so loud you think your lungs are going to *burst*, please get in touch if you feel like coming along. The harmonies are both rapturous and chilling...

Documentary on shape note singing made a while back:

We're led by one of the lecturers up at the music dept, a really cool ethnomusicologist called Juniper Hill. http://www.music.ucc.ie/index.php?/staff/detail/juniper_hill/

It's no big deal if you can't read music very well, if at all... The music isn't about perfecting anything or rehearsing. It's all about being truly present in it and just belting it out regardless. As a fine pair once said, we've only just begun, so now is the time to jump in if you're innerested.

Oh to live in Cork. Id really love to get back into singing.

Yo, group is getting bigger every week. Any Cork volk innerested get in touch. Ratmonkey was sitting beside me for it last week...
Unknown Convict, your group sounds cool. It's a totally open group, don't feel any pressure if you can't read music or are a shit singer. It's just about community etc. I'm totally not religious (I'd imagine nearly everyone else in the group is in the same boat) so don't be put off if you think it's going to be all old christians. Singing that stuff really blows your mind open to new modes and scale systems. Singing Dorian stuff, pentatonic, gapped scales... Anyway, here's another example of what it sounds like.
