Rick Parry, Chief Executive of Liverpool Football club has, at a hastily
convened Press Conference at 11.30am this morning, unveiled Mick McCarthy
as successor to Gerrard Houllier.
McCarthy, who will retain Phil Thompson as his assistant, has a clause
in his contract at Sunderland that allows him to leave if a Premiership
club seeks his services. He is expected to take charge of the squad at
the end of the European Championships.
Parry ruled out any interest in any other possible candidates for the
job and said "we believe that Mick has the ability and skills for what
we need at Liverpool, going forward there will obviously be budget
constraints and in his time at Sunderland and as manager of Ireland Mick
has shown an ability to work well within tight resource constraints."
McCarthy, flanked by Phil Thompson and Rick Parry was more than happy to
take questions from the media. When asked about any immediate changes to
the squad he did hint at strengthening the Irish connection to the
club...."This club is steeped in so much history and there has always
been a strong Irish connection running through this club and this city.
There are some top class players playing for the Republic and if the
circumstances were right of course it would be great to have one or two
of them here."
It is now expected that McCarthy will organise a major clear out at
Anfield before a summer swoop into the tranfer market where his targets
are already muted to be the likes of Gary Breen, ex Liverpool favourites
Jason McAteer and David James, Celtic's Bobo Balde and Ian Harte,
currently at relegated Leeds. A controversial move for out of favour
Everton midfielder Lee Carsley could also be in the offing.
The only downside for Liverpool fans is that Stephen Gerrard and Michael
Owen are said to be unhappy with the choice and, due to a clause in
their contracts, are almost certain to allowed to leave on free
transfers to Manchester United and Arsenal respectively.
