Anyone got a proven surefire way of breaking in rock-hard leather shoes?

preferably without losing blood and skin

this should be in the 'lifestyle' thread-sorry

a) rub olive oil into them*
b) pay an illegal immigrant to break them in for you*

NB: *neither of these are proven or surefire

ugh my doc martens were always a bitch to wear in, and nothing ever seemed to help. i'd have to grin and bear it, but once they were broken in they were comfy as.

converse are equally gruesome on the feet for the first few wears.

my only suggestion is to buy the plasters now before the pain gets too unbearable. i'm currently breaking in a new pair of shoes for work (ooow), and it's cutting the back of my heels but i'm sure it'll be worth it in the long run.

I find converse fine on the first wear, usually. Docs are murder though. Last time I got a pair I spent about 9 hours walking around New York before the pain really set in- excruciating! So to ease my pain I bought a pair of converse- which due to my ignorance of american sizes were too small! I stuffed my already aching feet into them and so the pain continued for the rest of my holiday. Vague recollection of shuffling about a 24 hour bar around dawn, on my shoes, using them like skates as opposed to wearing them.

someone really should invent something to avoid all this

Saddle soap used to soften leather and keep it nice and supple.
Also someone told me to put potatoes in them which apparently softens
up leather... some sort of chemical reaction with the spud juice.

really thick socks, like slipper socks. someone told me this last winter when i was moaning about them tearing the shit out of my heels, and it totally worked - they get broken in and your feet feel none of it.

edit:

Cushioned socks can help allieviate the pain in the early days too.

eh, didn't see this. -10 in reading comprehension for me.

Potatoes eh?

Do i rub the shoes with the potato then bury the potato under a full moon and say a hail mary?

I'll give that a go, and if i knew where i could find saddle soap i'd try that too- but i lke the idea of giving them to the shoemaker

let him to all the hard work like,

or use his elves, if that still goes on

what with the EU and Maastricht and what have you

cheers for the suggestions
