Someone would say they know them and they're sound. Someone connected to the band would come on and give out about the levels of vitriol directed at them ..then everyone would gang up on him

Thats because in the firebrand glory days the place was full of idealistic young musical turks out to make their mark in the brave new world of the internet.
Anything that stank of mediocrity or safety was rightly pilloried within an inch of its beige coloured life.
Today a small percentage of the same people populate it but they have become part time middle aged boppers just popping in for a quick look at whats going on whilst enjoying a nice cup of tea before settling down to watch Come Dine With Me All In One with their significant other.
Time has become too short for most to be bothered indulging in such pastimes as flame wars over an act they prolly secretly like now that they've lost the will to care.
