Brilliant example of someone not having a clue

'what is pop?'

http://www.popjustice.com/forum/index.php?topic=24218.msg1126754#msg1126754

Right now there is:
Orchestral - the type that is classical or found in film scores.
R'n'B - the type that is done with rapping, breathey vocals against bassey/hip hip backdrops and is made for Americans to grind in clubs against each other.
Variations of dance - the europeans club music.
Country.

Now here is the important part:
Pop - songs made with the added purpose of being 'catchy'. Catchy is traditionally verse-chorus-verse. But it can be anything from a gimmick/hook to some kind of melody.

When music became a mainstream "product" it was thanks to "short", "danceable" and most importantly "cathcy" or rather easily palatable songs. The most popular "products" became known as pop music and were traditionally liked by younger people and shunned by older people. Essentially "popular music" was borne from business termonology.

Pop has not changed over the years rather the other music genres that pop has borrowed from has. Even if a brand of pop music is not "popular" eg hipster pop (MGMT, Yeasayer, Young and Famous), the fact that they make songs that have a "catch" to them means they are intended for the same purposes as "popular music".

Rock - this broad category is traditionally associated with guitars. The reality is pop music was guitar music in the early days but with the arrival of both motown and disco, "rock" or guitar music took a genre of its own (which we now call "classic rock"). THEN when punk music arrived - it was the "antipop", it happened to use guitars as well when really the essence of punk was being unconventional in style, lyrics, song structures etc. "Punk" type music revolutions happened in many many forums across dance, electro and other guitar type music ("goth").

"Other genres" - music that is not "pop", a huge amount of these genres exist.

So now what we have is a distorted view of what "pop" is -

- if someone is popular then they are pop? NO. This is the hipster/music snob attitude AKA "oh no my indie band got to #1, they are pop I hate them".

- if a band has guitars then they are rock? NO. They could be making pure pop music that uses guitars.

-"indie" music can be pop music, it is simply a denomination given to record labels.

Right now in pop music we have got a huge variety of "manufactured", self made and what I call "hipster" pop. Pop has never been better.

A pop song can be Day Tripper by the Beatles, Song 2 by Blur, Easy by Paula DeAnda, Bulletproof by La Roux, Breathing by Kate Bush, Curve by Horror Head, Anbling Amp by Yeasayer.

Non pop songs that are still mainstream are like ones by Beach House, Best Coast, Caribou, Massive Attack etc.

best response so far

You know nothing about music, I see.
