Blu-ray vs HD-DVD (1 Viewer)

I have both and the quality is identical. To me anyway. The one difference i have noticed is that the extras on blu ray are in HD where my hd dvds' extras are in SD. Whether this is a result of blu rays greater capacity i don't know.

HD is great for recent movies like Casino Royale. I have older movies on HD-DVD (deerhunter, goodfellas) and while it looks great it doesn't look as impressive as contemporary movies.

Sony have a bad record with their proprietary formats - umd, minidisc etc but blu ray recordable discs might become very popular.

We were talkin about this in another thread:

Looks like HD-DVD is doomed.

Warner has dropped support for it and now it looks like Paramount might follow suit.

If that happens it would mean that blu ray would account for over 80% Hollywood output.

i now own a massive collection of four bluray movies, so i'm happy.

They're sort of ignoring the larger problem, which is that neither Blu-Ray OR HD-DVD discs are exactly widely available at retail. I really had to work hard to find a copy of the new Blade Runner cut, which is hardly a niche release. Unless you go online or somewhere like HMV, the HD formats might as well not exist.

Well thats out of their hands. The demand isn't there right now so retailers aren't gonna waste shelf space.

The selection on both formats is shite in fairness. Must have titles such as Click, Van Helsing and Toto Live from 1988.

i am starting to see much more blu-ray discs around. in game shops and hmv. also the blu-ray discs are about 10 euro cheaper

Yeah, the titles are bafflingly shit alright. You might almost think they wanted them to fail. Anyway, when I asked some Gamestop manager dude whether he'd be getting Blade Runner in on Blu-Ray (because I wasn't so into watching one of their 58 copies of Scooby Doo) he was all !zed:confused:. Y'know, because nobody walking into a game store would be in any way interested in Blade Runner.

We watched Blade Runner on blu-ray on Sunday. Even via component on our small TV it looked pretty great.

I considered buying the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive but don't really see the point when I've got the ps3 bluray player.

So far i've watched three of my four bluray movies and i've been really impressed. Just watched the fifth element tonight on my shiny new 1080p tellybox, and even though the movie is a few years old the picture is only fabillis. I'll be watching the 30th Anniversary Edition of Close Encounters over the weekend so it'll be interesting to see how that looks.

The porn industry will decide, just as they did in the Betamax Vs. VHS War.

Everyone keeps saying that but its very unlikely. The only reason it did with Betamax Vs. VHS was that pervos had no alternative at the time and the notion of watching porn at home was such a novelty that it drove sales through the roof.

Now porn is a million times more accessible with internet, dvds and there just isn't any big demand for HD porn.

Who wants to be rubbin one out in front of a home cinema in 5.1 anyway Goffy?

I've got both drives on my PC.
I watched 300, Spiderman 3 and Blade Runner (old, I know) in Blu Ray.
I watched Planet Earth in HD DVD.
Really can't tell the difference.
Looks like Blu Ray might win out commercially though.

HD porn though... I dunno if I want to see mega-sized, horrible, crystal clear pussy spots and shaft welts.

agree with ya lefty, plus the home dvd movie market is way bigger than the vhs market ever was. You only have to walk into a hmv to see this, there is the same amount of dvd's as cd's. so i reckon it will be decided by the studios and at the moment thats blu-ray
