This year's Avant Festival sees experimental poetry festival, SoundEye, partner up again with Cork's weirdo-music purveyors, Black Sun, for a very unique event set to take place Thursday 14th at Christchurch at the Triskel. Curator Vicky Langan has put together a night of improvised sound, with a strong emphasis on poetics and the voice.
Headlining the event is the brilliantly inventive Adam Bohman, (Morphogenesis, The London Improvisers Orchestra), who will be working with bowed string and various other implements, Canadian-based sound poet Steve McCaffery -who will be performing an excerpt from his famous work 'Carnival', and poet cris cheek. Adam Bohman will also be joined by Cork's own sonic junk merchants, (Wölflinge and First Blood Part II) for a blast of tactile improvisation. During the course of the evening, there will be scattering of readings from poets from the SoundEye programme. All in all, it promises to be a lively, ear opening event focusing on experimental sound and utterance!

Black Sun and SoundEye presents:

  • Adam Bohman

  • Steve McCaffery

  • cris cheek

Adam Bohman is one half of The Bohman Brothers (the other being Jonathan Bohman), and is also a member of Morphogenesis and The London Improvisors Orchestra.

"...On the other hand, I could listen to a release like Adam Bohman's 'Music and Words' CD all day. That is, if I wanna have the creeps. For the most part, he makes all the music with percussive instruments and small gadgets - coils, metal rods, wire brushes - and intersperses it with dialogue from his'talking tapes', rare commodities evidently. If you've ever wanted to know David Tibet's piercing secrets or what Blightly lads eat before a long day of extracting rat teeth, step right up."

Steve McCaffery

Steve McCaffery is a Canadian poet and scholar who was a professor at York University. He currently holds the Gray Chair at SUNY Buffalo (Amherst). McCaffery was born in Sheffield, England and lived in the UK for most of his youth attending University of Hull. He moved to Toronto in 1968. In 1970, he began to collaborate with fellow poets Rafael Barreto-Rivera, Paul Dutton, and bpNichol, forming the sound-poetry group, The Four Horsemen. McCaffery's poetry attempts to break language from the logic of syntax and structure to create a purely emotional response. He has created three-dimensional structures of words and has released a number of sound and video works, often in collaboration with other poets.

"Consider the page not as a space but as a death occuring in the gap between 'writing' and 'wanting to say' "
--Steve McCaffery

Steve will be reading from the second panel of 'Carnival' for this event.
