In work today we caught this wasp-like creature that's an inch-and-a-half long. It's stinger (we'll one of em, it seems to have two) was about the length of a standard wasp. Anyone know what the hell these things are? I've never seen one before in my life and it doesn't look like something native to Ireland but who know. Anyone else encountered these monsters?

Dunno but there's been loads of massive spiders knocking around this summer.

could be some sort of ichneumon wasp, solitary wasps that sting and paralyse some other insect before palying their eggs on it, sweeeeet!!!

The scientific name means 'persuasive burglar'.

That definitely sounds like a hornet. I've seen them in Scotland so they wouldn't have any major issues with our climate... nasty buggers though!

Yep it's the [FONT=verdana, arial, helvetica]Giant Ichneumon wasp . I think. Well that horntail wasp looks exactly like it too. Is that the same species?

Thanks for your help guys. That ovipositor looks terrifying.
