best kids song (1 Viewer)

Er, not sure why I've stumbled into this thread (Freudian pre-emptive strike? She's only a week late!) but there's a great cd out called 'Songs For The Young At Heart' with nice interpretations of kids' TV show songs by various indiebod luminaries.
Will Oldham's 'Puff The Magic Dragon' is a thing of wondrous beauty.

Are you having a kid?

And do you have a ponytail?

what about two little boys? or do only adults like it? i like that version rolf harris did with liam o'mwainlee

Saddest song ever. And its not just the lyrics, the actual air is heartbreaking.

Another one that alway got me was The Gypsy Rover
Not really a kids song, but we sang it when I was in the cub scouts.

The Gypsy Rover came over the hills,
Down to the valley so shady;
He whistled and he sang
til the greenwood rang,
And he won the heart of a lady.

A dee do a dee do die day,
A dee do a dee day-o
He whistled and he sang
Til the greenwood rang,
And he won the heart of a lady.

She left her father's castle gates,
she left her fair young lover;
She left her servants
And her estate
to follow the gypsy rover.

A dee do a dee do die day,
A dee do a dee day-o
She left her servants
And her estate
to follow the gypsy rover.

She left behind her velvet gown,
And shoes of Spanish leather
They whistled and they sang
Till the greenwood rang,
As they rode off together.

A dee do a dee do die day,
A dee do a dee day-o
They whistled and they sang
Till the greenwood rang,
As they rode of together.

Last night she slept on goose feather bed
With silken sheets for a cover;
Tonight she sleeps
On the cold, cold ground
Beside her gypsy lover.

A dee do a dee do die day,
A dee do a dee day-o
Tonight she sleeps
On the cold, cold ground
Beside her gyspy lover.

Her father mounted up his fasted steed
To search the valleys all over
Sought his daughter
At great speed
And the whistling gypsy rover.

A dee do a dee do die day,
A dee do a dee day-o

Sought his daughter
At great speed
And the whistling gypsy rover.

They came at last to a mansion fine,
Down by the river Claydee
And there was music
And there was wine,
For the gypsy and his lady.

A dee do a dee do die day,
A dee do a dee day-o
And there was music
And there was wine,
For the gypsy and his lady.

"He is no gypsy, my father" she said
"But lord of these lands all over,
And I shall stay
'til my dying day
With my whistling gypsy rover."

A dee do a dee do die day,
A dee do a dee day-o
And I shall stay
'til my dying day
With my whistling gypsy rover."

My parents used to sing this in the car. They also had a different version of the lyrics about a clockwork mouse

Deadly, it must be some craic being a parent.

There was that other song too, something about an old lady who lived down by some river waila or something. I think she might have killed a baby.
