Best and worst specialist music magazines...Irish or otherwise (1 Viewer)

Don't worry Mitchum, your just the kind of fire-bellied young music journo The Rim(Ireland's most newest quarterly music mag) is looking for- you're hired!report to your editor -large hearted boy- immedio

Ha! The Rim. I like it.

3000 word Balkan Folk Primer coming up.

Would there actually be a market for this The Rim? DIY zines is the way to go. As long as writers don't mind not being paid :)

Don't know.
I reckon it'll be a blog. If there is one thing that we really need is an online blog with music reviews.

Actually... here's the idea. The Rim is a zine to be read on the toilet.

Seriously... who wants to write for this?

yeah there's a market...how many hits does this site get a day?loads that's how many, anyways if you keep the overheads really low(strictly no gloss) and choose carefully the people you have to answer too (ie. backers and advertisers) then it would be possible to create something of sufficient quality to compete in the fairly small Irish market. writers would be rewarded handsomely with standard quality lager plus a bonus of scampi and/or bacon fries - can't say fairer than that.

Boo, I much prefer physical print mags. I think its the fact that a mag like The Wire I don't get everything thats in there but I go back to one in a few months time or even years and see theres an article about a genre or band I've gotten into in the mean time and it's great.

Toilet idea isn't great. Throw away too easily etc etc..

Another problem is would this be non-profit or a business? If it was done DIY/non-profit (which of course does NOT mean writers not getting paid) then it could be started up by a arts grant or a loan and then subs and actual purchases would help it pay for itself. Maybe. Its just I can never grasp why mags that would sell thousands of copies would still go under. Start small..

I've got no money and I have a family. The profits of this will be thrown towards the loan sharks who swim around my little house.

Seriously though..
The Rim. A magazine thing with articles about music and stuff that has about 200 copies at first. Gets distributed in Dublin and London or something like that.
Don't need adverts for the time being. Just sell it for the amount it costs to print it out. So maybe a £1 or something.

It all sounds so easy on the internet.

well first off you could to a contra deal with the loan sharks for advertising space, that should help with the debt. Loan sharks are always looking to reach new markets, especially around the most wonderful time of the year.

It ain't hard at all. Of course it doesn't mean anyone at all will read it :)

Mojo and The Word can be good, depending on what the cover

I like the Foggy design but the articles can be a bit yawny. Does Leagues write EVERY piece or is that just my imagination?

The new State sounds interesting. Hear there's a rake of ex-HP people involved though which always makes me suspicious.

what issues were your letters in? probably have them at home.

I honestly can't remember the issue numbers offhand.
One was in an issue with Alice Coltrane on the cover taking a writer to task on a sniffy Flaming Lips review and another was pointing out the glaring omission of Frank Zappa in their 'humour in rock' feature. I think Wilco were on the cover of that one.

My finest hour.

Oh and we need to get cesspooldublin (poster on here, mostly Eirecore) to do reviews. His ones for Unfit For Consumption are the greatest reviews of all time.

that's not really a problem...you could and maybe should go not for profit and hopefully avail of some sort of grant situation, failing that if you get good advertisers then you should be able to keep zee proverbial head above water. The reason mags with high circulation goes under is because the only money in publishing is advertising, if your readers aren't proven to be a profitable market then you're gone. The Irish Press failed eventually for just that reason I think, it had loads and loads of readers but they tended to be middle-aged conservative farmers who apparently weren't such an alluring demographic for big money advertisers.

I'm definitely on for it, I could review, write the odd article, edit/proofread if need be, design i'm okish with, can draw stuff if really pushed . But we need someone who's really proactive about getting ads or else the non-profit route as Gambra suggested. Start small, concentrate on Ireland but not exclusive to this country, and sell in Ireland/UK/elsewhere.
No blog!!! :D
