ANNOUNCING BELFEST 2005

Welcome to the 9th annual ‘Belfest’ programme. This year’s expanded festival takes place between Wednesday 16th and Monday 28th November and is part of Belfast City Council’s ‘Celebrate Belfast’ programme of events.

The festival programme presents a wide selection of free new music showcase events, fifteen ticketed feature concerts and a range of skills development events.

This year’s free showcase gigs will take place between Tuesday 22nd and Saturday 26th November with more than 40 local artists and bands performing in a wide variety of city venues.

NIMIC will also host 3 key educational events including a ‘Songcraft’ song-writing seminar, a ‘VocalWorks’ voice masterclass and a high powered Music Management panel event.

The 2005 ticketed concert events feature some of our most creative Northern Ireland artists as well as an eclectic line up of international performers. This year’s cross cutting theme is a celebration of the songwriter’s art and craft across a wide range of musical styles from rock to roots.

Among the headlining artists at BELFEST 2005 will be internationally acclaimed Omagh singer/songwriter Juliet Turner, recent Blue Note/Parlophone signing Claire Sproule from Derry, punk stalwarts The Damned, New York's post punk Liars, dark Glasgow tunesmiths Sons and Daughters, former Lift To Experience frontman Josh Pearson, New Order's Peter Hook performing a DJ set, cultured Irish rock band The Devlins, the inimitable John Martyn and his band, US country/roots legend Jimmie Dale Gilmore, LA based songwriters extraordinaire John Doe and Peter Case, UK Alt country pioneer Michael Weston King, the Grammy award nominated country artist Tift Merritt, guitar legend from our own north coast Henry McCullough, piping prodigy Jarlath Henderson from Dungannon and breakthrough rockers Fighting With Wire.

Councillor Bernie Kelly, Chairman of Belfast City Council’s Arts Sub-Committee commented: "This superb showcase of our finest new and established home grown music talent is yet another fine exponent of Belfast's rich festivals calendar. belFEST will serve to further reinforce Belfast's status as both a city of festivals and a European cultural centre. With so many exciting young artists on the bill, Belfast City Council's support of belFEST represents an important investment in the cultural future of our city."

Northern Ireland Music Industry Commission (NIMIC) CEO Ross Graham states: “belFEST is a great home showcase for our creative musical talent and a real opportunity for the further development of this important sector within the creative industries. This year’s event promises to be better than ever – with an extended free showcase and skills development programme, and a series of brilliant and eclectic international artist gigs – all around the city.”
