Why Belfast and not Dublin?
Did they get some crazy tax breaks or something?

because commercially dublin's an overrated kip. imagine the horror of the bt2 crowd when they read that abercrombe and fitch wouldnt even sniff at taking up a shop space on grafton street because it was infested with poverty traps such as mcdonalds and mobile phone shops. too common for their brand (but primarily because rent was disproportionatly expensive compared to other european high streets).

Belfast, a city rejuvinating itself, part of the UK so Apple can increase its presence in that market and also knows us saps across the border will drive all that way to shop there so they've covered the republic as well (see also IKEA, petrol stations, supermarkets for cross border madness). Plus i imagine rent is dirt cheap, staff are 'spot on' to use the nordy lingo and it looks good to be setting up in a new hip part of the country.

what about ye, apple? Ulster says "aye!"

From what i can gather the apple store seems to be mainly targetted at people who don't know a whole lot about Macs/iPods, people who want to feel comfortable asking simple questions and want to use and see the products in the flesh. These people wouldn't necessarily want to drive 2 hours to do that and also wouldn't feel comfortable ordering blind from apple.ie

Also most apple stores have a walk in troubleshooting/repair area. I could see a decent demand for that given the amount of people every day looking for ipod/mac repairs.

I reckon we'll see a store in Dublin within a few years.

This is true.
At an apple store recently the dude in the t-shirt seemed surprised when I knew exactly what I wanted and disappointed that I just wanted to buy it and go.

Easiest sale he ever had I'd say

HMD texted me last year from Glasgow saying he was in an apple shop, and I thought he was in some kind of shop that sold apple-related things, like apple shaped teapots and tea towels with apples on them. I was very disappointed when I found out this wasn't the case.

I'm similarly disappointed with this thread.
