Dear anybody who cares,
We’d like to announce the formation of a new collective – BASTA! YOUTH COLLECTIVE.
‘Basta!’ is a Spanish word meaning ‘enough is enough’ or ‘stop’. It is famously used by the Mexican Zapitistas, a community army without central leadership, who are fighting against the Mexican government for the land of Mexico to belong once again to the indigenous peoples of the land and not be sold off to the highest bidder as is happening.
In our context it means enough is enough we’re going to take action into our own hands and utilise all means possible with the intention of educating communities to better, more sustainable and fulfilling ways of living.
The guilty parties are at the moment Lyndsay, Conor, Sherry and myself. As of present the collective is closed but is more than open to suggestions and ideas.
Basically we want to support each other in future projects (not just gigs) and also support others in their ventures.
Also we’d like to provide a regular, ego free, alternative to Blast.
There are a number of possibly great projects on the horizon in the very near future so keep an ear open! Hopefully a website will be set-up soon as well.
Feel free to contact us with any ideas you have by talking to one of us at a gig or by email at [email protected]
Below is our ‘mission statement’ which was submitted as part of a new proposal to Dun Laoghaire Co. Co.
“Dear Sir/Madame,
We are an autonomous youth lead collective working to improve the quality of life and facilities for young people and indeed the whole community in the areas we live and recreate.
Our goal is to inspire, encourage and support individuals and groups wishing to improve our society. We do this through information exchange, discussion and debate, practical example and application, art, films and music to name but a few.
We intend to empower and enable individuals and communities to educate themselves to current and future issues affecting their lives with the ultimate goal of enabling them to govern themselves and make their own informed decisions.
Recently we have been working to create a network and community of friends free from insecurities and peer pressure.”
