Bad Thoughts, this Wednesday October 22nd at 8.30pm

The Bad Thoughts discussion group comes together again this Wednesday at the slightly later time of 8.30.

This week's topic is "Anti-Capitalism and the Media"

The mass media these days is controlled by fewer & fewer people. All across the world there are media moguls such as Silvio Berlusconi or even closer to home the O'Reilly empire, who own radio & TV stations, newspapers, magazines, newswires, internet sites, etc.

Time and time again the mass media are content to only show 10-second snippets of media coverage from demonstrations where there may be some "newsworthy" content, i.e. a flashpoint or conflict. This is often depicted in a vacuum. How do we overcome this? Is there a way of making inroads into the mass media? Or is it up to us to create alternative media networks? Should we talk to the mass media at all? Are big demonstrations really just a spectacle?

All these questions and more will hopefully be addressed during the discussion.

Brian from the new website Anarchomedia will be present to give a short introduction to the talk, and we will hopefully have someone from Indymedia Ireland as well.

For more information contact Keith on 086 336 3743.

weeler, can you do us a favour? indymedia is down at the moment and i have to leg it from the PC, so if you get a chance can you copy and paste it up on the event calendar for us that would be sound... thanks

to get it up on the event calendar you just post it as a normal article but pick "event notice" for the category

nice one

Just to let everyone know - this was postponed last night as Brian from anarchomedia could not make it due to adverse weather conditions.

It has been re-scheduled for next week, that's Wednesday the 29th of October, at the usual time of 7.30pm.

Same details as above. Hope to see you then. We'll also hopefully have some information handouts about media ownership in Ireland on the night.

Is it not true that media (from early printed material to huge digital billboards) has always been controlled by a few for their own end and that with the onset of readily available technology and the interent etc that information is more readily available that ever before. It could be a long debate but interesting projects to autonomise information include the community based WiFi projects and stuff like this http://www.wired.com/news/infostructure/0,1377,57061,00.html

there was a group of people trying to set up a citywide wireless network. It involves individuals or communities buying the basepoints to provide themselves with an internet connection without the help of errorcom or any other corporate provider. I cant find their link and I dont know what stage they were at but its a good idea that could be worked on anywayz.
