Must check out Carver. Have heard a lot of good things.

anyone who hasn't read any denis johnson should do so immediately. i would say he's my favourite american writer. angels, jesus' son, fiskadoro, resuscitation of a hanged man, tree of smoke. all good starting points. jesus' son is spectacularly good. his latest, nobody move, isn't great but he's an incredible writer all the same

post office is good but ham on rye is bukowski's best, imo

Han in rye? Its pretty good alright but my favourite is run with the hunted or factotum

Again, obvious choice maybe, but Junot Diaz's The brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao is a great book. As is his other, Drown.
