Ive been expanding RAR files for ages no problem

But is it better then making an archive in OSX?

How much compression would you get on a 100mb file/s 99%? 50%?

know any good free rar compression application that are free?

Forever in your debt

Making a .rar/compressed file on any OS should be exactly the same (for each type of compression). It also depends totally on the file type you're compressing i.e. mp3 files don't compress that well as they're already compressed to bits as it is. I recently compressed a db file for a client using the standard windows zip app, it went from about 90mb down to ~75mb. When I compressed it using 7zip's own compression algorithm it compressed down to ~17mb. Huge difference. I only really use the builtin zip app on os x and unrar x to unpack stuff but there does exist a 7zip port for os x http://www.7-zip.org/download.html Of course, whoever you're sending the file too would need 7zip installed aswell.
