how do i do this on xp?

Go to desktop, press 'Prnt Scrn' key, open paint, Edit->Paste, then save image.

 

[Space]

Close all your windows and hit the print screen button, then open that image in any image software like paint or photoshop. You open it by opening a new image and then pasting what's on your clipboard. I'm hungover so hopefully that makes sense.

It's basically:
prt sc (print screen)
open software
new
ctrl v
