PRESS RELEASE

SCIENCE GALLERY EXHIBITION TO END ON A HIGH NOTE

How do your vocal cords function as a musical instrument?
How is the voice used in different cultures?
Do we sing when we speak?

From human beatbox to an up close and personal view of the vocal cords, the VOICE evening at Science Gallery on October 1st will explore the magic of the human voice through a range of performances, talk and experiments. VOICE marks the end of Science Gallery's flagship exhibition BIORHYTHM: MUSIC AND THE BODY which has received over 65,000 visitors since opening in July.
In an evening hosted by Gerry Godley, you'll be able to explore the incredible instrument that is the human voice with singer Jennifer Walsh, traditional singer Roisin Elsafty, master human beatboxer Shlomo collaborating with Irish beatboxer Whitenoise and the choral grandeur of the Mornington Singers.
Beatbox artist Shlomo became internationally recognised after his work with Icelandic superstar Bjork was nominated for a Grammy. Shlomo’s beats were then used as the theme to the Athens Olympics, with the Opening Ceremony performance reaching an estimated audience of 4.5 billion worldwide.
Shlomo’s ground breaking solo show features his remarkable ability to create all manner of music using nothing but his mouth and a microphone.

New York-based composer and performer Jennifer Walshe was born in Dublin and studied composition at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and Northwestern University, Chicago, graduating with a doctoral degree in composition in 2002. She says "The sounds I am interested in include those that we hear all the time but are normally considered flawed or redundant: twigs snapping in a burning fire, paper tearing, breathing, instrumental sounds that aren’t considered ‘beautiful’ in standard terms. I think these sounds have their own beauty in the way that pebbles on a beach or graffiti can have."

For VOICE Jennifer Walshe agreed to let Professor Conrad Timon perform a transnasal endoscopy to allow the audience to see the workings of her vocal cords in all their beauty.

The Mornington Singers is an award-winning mixed-voice chamber choir based in Dublin and conducted by Orla Flanagan. Following a number of international awards the Mornington Singers has established itself as one of Ireland's leading choirs.
