1000 recordings to hear before you die (1 Viewer)

not as bad as i was expecting judging from the comments here. took me a good while to find something really appalling such as "Shakira, ¿Donde están los ladrones?". it's a better list than most (ridiculous internet best albums lists)

yeah but this is a book, not an internet list. i just expected better.

also the title 'best recordings' is misleading. I was expecting hindenberg radio commentry, edisons first wax cylinder recording etc.

I don't get it, some of them are albums while some are just single songs

I think this is the same guy that was interviewed on All Songs Considered. He talked about going through the process and what changes he made that surprised him while making the list. I found it kind of interesting. He left out a lot of 'mainstream' (for lack of a better word) recordings because he thought most people would find them... he wanted to dig a bit deeper and find others that were worthy. I think the chapters explain the process.

the big books - 1001 Albums you must hear before you die and likewise for films

they're quite good.

i've flicked through them and they seem quite good.

But the title.

It's so pompous.

I could never buy a book that proclaims it's own self importance in such an arrogant way.

Even with a cover like this?

Somebody typed out the entire list of 1001 movies here: http://www.berbecuta.com/2008/03/14/1001-movie-you-must-see-before-you-die/. The good thing about the book is they give you the background info on the movies and you end up slavering to see them. This is the website of the 1001 series: http://1001beforeyoudie.com/. This is the full list of the 1001 albums: [ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1001_Albums_You_Must_Hear_Before_You_Die[/ame]. There's a lot of shite in it too. Limp Bizkit anyone?

although those 1001 books are very heavy i.e. only suitable for reading at home.

bringing one on your daily commute wouldn't suit me.

some crap in the list particularly from the 1990s onwards but some of the reviews of older stuff make you wanna re-listen or buy the records. Nice that they mark key songs too. Even though you might not agree with them.
