Im just wondering what somebody can do with your IP address apart from block you from forums etc.

The reason im asking is because I was looking up skins sites such as Combat 18. The urge to join the forum and run amok and argue with some skinheads was oh so strong but I didnt want some retaliation by a bunch of nazi's. If they had the brains could they hack past my XP firewall and do any damage to my computer etc. or am I being too careful..

Kind of a weird question I know but I want a row with a skinhead but dont want my face glassed.

It depends on your IP address. If it's a dialup account you're usually ok as the chances of it repeating from session to session is pretty slim.

But if you're on DSL / cable / leased line and have a static IP (or even a dynamic IP, but you don't refresh your DHCP shit by disconnecting / reconnecting) then it's different - it creates an opportunity for the determined types to focus on you.

The XP firewall is ok for basic stuff, but you really need better protection if you think there's a chance you're going to be deliberately targetted.

Apart from that, you could try using someone else's proxy to disguise your IP address.... I'd also recommend you use something like hushmail for creating registration email addresses if you're feeling really paranoid.

or surf the net through www.the-cloak.com or www.webproxy.com where your IP is disguised (I think you have to pay for both of them, but if that's the price of anonimity, then go ahead.)

cheers - Im on DSL so I figured that Id be more 'exposed'. I had always used zonealarm but it started affecting the operation of some of my programs. I had wondered if there was a way to 'refresh' the dhcp without disconnecting. Cheers anyway Im off to check out webproxy.com and then piss off some combat18ers

you could try typing ipconfig /renew at a dos prompt...

Send out the link to as many people as possible get then to open the page and minimise it for a while causing an overload their server. Again I wanted to piss of the skins more so I have a page ready but is that crossing any legal boundries and if not can I post up the link.

christ i hope you got some good programming hacking skills up yer broken sleeve because if you attack where you only have an inkling of computer wrecking then quite possibly u could leave yourself open to some serious hack attack. after all these combat18 guys are fairly military in their approach to everything so apart from having extremist ideals i suspect one or two may have a computer degree under their belt.... i'm sure combat18 realise the benefits of knowing other peoples business

well I wasnt really hacking. I wanted to join their forum and have a few words but didnt want to bother 'cloaking' or resetting my IP (i may have been stoned or something). They were using the same forum engine as thumped (which is for pricks) and I wasnt sure of pete's/admins view of users etc

the other thing : setting a refresh site is just a way of overloading a server to bring down a site (only if enough people run it). Its fairly simple and i wouldnt have it on a registered domain etc so it would be hard for them to follow up etc.

broken arm, youre IP has been logged and not only can we trace it to your ISP but to your home adress aswell. So i advise you not just to be carefull opening your e-mails but also your snail mail.
