They've also brought back their own Chocolate Truffle Stout for this. It's the best of the lot, IMO.

Yep, the Druid's Brew was excellent. It ran until Monday and was replaced on Tuesday with O'Hara's Stout, which I think may still be on.

I don't think they are. And the beer will still be there after the match is over.

Quick heads-up for the ale fans: on Saturday (around Lions kick-off time) the Bull & Castle will be tapping a cask of O'Hara's Red. As with the cask they did back in March, the quicker this goes, the more likely we'll get more cask beers.

If you've not tried the Speakeasy beers, they're well worth a punt. Prohibition and Double Daddy are the best of the bunch, IMO, though opinion varies. There's some great Bateman's stuff knocking about at the moment: Dark Lord in particular, though Victory is pretty good too. And if you're...

Not pedantic at all, preferably. Which is why I think the notion of a distinctive class called "ESB" is a bit pointless and overly pedantic. Possibly, but it's more because American brewers and drinkers seem to believe that all beer can be pedantically categorised into one of 100-or-so style...

I think just about any pale ale could be described as a "less hoppy IPA". Apart from IPA, obviously.

They're two very different beers (and the acronyms stand for different things). I don't get the notion of "ESB" as a defined beer style.

I thought it was a bit one-dimensional. Have you tried the Sierra Nevada Torpedo? Brilliant beer, and much more to it, IMO.

We'd have to ask. And before that we'd have to decide if we want to run another one. And before that we'd have to run the first one :) Here.

No plans at the moment -- it's mostly just a question of getting a willing venue. Hopefully if this goes well we'll be able to do something similar again in Dublin.

Brew It Yourself 2009 -- Cork, April 18th

A bunch of us home brewers are setting up a stand in The Franciscan Well for a day on Saturday 18th. We're going to be talking brewing to anyone who'll listen and we'll have lots of free samples to give out. If you're at all interested in making your own beer or cider, or want to improve on...

Noooo... cask ale is cask conditioned. It's bottle conditioned beers that are bottle conditioned. Clue's in the name, see? Redmond's of Ranelagh usually have a few Wychwood things, as does Carvill's on Camden Street. They're a mixed bunch: Goliath and Bah Humbug are particularly woeful. The...

With Hooker you get that sensation, and the feeling that you're not further fuelling a domineering economic power, just the drinking budget of a couple of lads in a shed outside Roscommon.

A real IPA is one that says "IPA" on the label. That's really all there is to it. I've been discussing it at length over the last couple of days here. Not for the faint-hearted or easily bored. Clarification: by "either of them" above, I meant Purgatory and Hooker, not Hercules and Snake Dog...

Errr, US IPA is a pretty broad church: there's a lot of ground between Snake Dog and Hercules, for example. I wouldn't say either of them taste exactly like any US IPA, but they taste a lot more like it than any other Irish beer, what with the hops and all. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale has been cited...

Oh, any variety and I'd be happy. Frankly, Hooker and Purgatory fulfill my American-style pale ale needs adequately. Some fruit beer or an nice unhopped ale would be great about now. And not really like Play Doh, as some might have you believe :) WARNING: link contains images of smug bald git...

I'm a drinker, not a brewer. And fortunately every Irish craft brewer who makes a bland lager makes at least one decent beer, so I'm rarely stuck for choice when selecting among them. 'Tis true. And I have recommended to a craft-brewing start-up not to go the traditional-but-dull stout-lager-red...
