    tele buzz

...the connections on the pick up itself with the volume control on 10. Again it should read 7.5k ish. If it reads 0 or no read the pick up is f*cked but this would be unusual. This is not always possible (measuring directly across the pickup) so the next best thing it to probe the two outer...

    fender twin valves question

I buy most of my gear from www.tube-town.net. They also sell Fender parts. JJ 6L6GCs are good all rounders, SovTek 5881 are great if you want some extra bite. The Tung Sol re issues are nice too, nice warm sound. I wouldn't bother with Groove Tubes as they just match other peoples valves and...

    Gear Pron

Seen as it's been all very safe, non nude porn so far I thought I'd whip out some real manky, hardcore stuff!! ENGL PowerBall, Marshall DSL100, Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier, Peavey 5150 and an amp I built myself that's finished now.

    Volume boost for solos?

Danelectro use rainbow coloured ribbon cable to interconnect PCBs in their pedals. For that reason I thought they were pro-gay. Maybe they just wanna keep the gays guys single and available?

    Modified/Personalised

I've done a fair bit on both guitars and amps. My uTube page in my sig has some examples if ya wanna take a look.

    Volume boost for solos?

In my experience I've found that boosting certain frequencies using a graphic EQ yields the best results for what you're trying to do. Setting the EQ to an inverte smile works really for this, a bit of mid boost is what you want to cut through, especially upper mids. It works really well at...

Vintage gear - do you buy it?

...reliable, sound awesome and are realtively easy to service. IMO It's just like it was back in the 60s and 70s; a lot of great gear and even more sh*te. The Mark series Mesa's as well as some of the Dual Rec series, early 5150 series Peaveys, SLO and Soldanos in general are some semi vintage...

    Watford valves

Buy all my valves from them (or www.tube-town.net another great site, TT cabs are highly recommended!!) as well as a few other and ends. Haven't one of their valves fail yet, the power valves come in pretty well matched sets (usually within 10mA, which is good enough), and they've a great...

That's probably my fault. It's ok, I'll shut up now I promise. :)

    watts, speakers size and loudness...

Hey hey, someone had to!! :) Moose/Sparse, you're both right. More speakers is not actually technically louder, a SPL meter will give the same reading, but it will feel louder/fuller as a wider surface area is pushing the air. An angled 4 X 12 will seem louder too, as the angled speakers are...

    watts, speakers size and loudness...

...have been allowed to quote higher power ratings because they sound pleasant when driven into clipping, even for HiFi. We all know that they sound f*kin great when pushed even harder and most valve guitar amps are designed to let you do this. This means your 50 Watt Marshall is capable of...

    watts, speakers size and loudness...

Tube/valve watts are not louder than SS watts. The problem here arrises from the fact that there is no strict definition of watts in a valve amp. One manufacturer may call their amp 30Watts (@ 1% THD), the next manufacturer could call their, otherwise identical amp, 50Watts (@ 10% THD). THD =...

Tube amp help. Way too much buzzing!

The most likely cause is a dodgy power valve, it's probably not the preamp valves as the volume does not affect the level of buzz. Try removing the power valves and see does the noise go away. If it does it's time to get a new set of power valves and continue rockin'.:)

modding tube amps without killing oneself/amp

My advice is look up some soldering guides on-line. There's loads of demo vids on uTube and plenty of step-by step-instructions. Once you're happy with that I'd say make a trip to Maplin or use their on-line store. Get a cheap 25W soldering iron, a small tube of solder, a bit of perf board, a...

    3A GLASS FUSES

Radionics or Farnell have them on next day delivery from their on-line store, that's where I get my mine. Delivery isn't much and I'd get a pack of ten just to have them. If it's a valve amp check and see what HT fuse is uses and get a few of them while you're at it.

    Amp on standby

Mmmmm gazz, what you do with your arse is your own business, but there's need to have a willy up there just so you can disconnect a speaker while your amp's on stand-by.!! :) In most valve amps the stand-by disconnects the high voltage in the amp. The means there's no power source to drive...

    Attenuators

...when people try the amp out in a store it will sound really loud compared to another amp and people will think "I gotta get this one". Bit of a sh*tty thing to be doing IMO and it sounds like your amp is one of these. You could have an audio taper pot installed too which will give you even...

    Attenuators

No it's not. You have to change the impedance setting, re-bias the power valves and when you're done it makes almost no difference volume wise. You'll drop about 3dB. 1 dB is defined as the minimal preceivable volume change by the typical human ear. To get a 100 watter to be half as loud you...
