i'd have 2 or 3 most days, 4 the odd day and 1 once in a blue moon. this should help stave off the alzhiemers at least and hopefully the parkinsons and diabetes too.

That seems pretty reasonable. I probably drink about the same. Saturday mornings I usually drink a bit more, but rarely drink coffee on Sundays for some reason. I don't get withdrawal headaches if I go off coffee for a while, which is good.

How the motherfuck do you roast coffee at home? Can you buy fresh beans?

I used to grind my own and it definitely tastes fresher. What coffee do youns consume? Mahers in Cork is daycent.

I have a moka maker and it makes wonderful coffee.
I got a coffee grinder at chrimbo from by gf's folks. I haven't bought any beans in a while. the last ones I got where Idee(sp?) ones and they weren't very nice. Before that I got some magic beans in George's St Arcade - cuban roast. It was lovely.

Anyone tried the stuff from Cork Coffee Roasters? I recommend the Morning Growler. Lovely stuff and it has a bear on the packet. RAWWRRR.

i read something about it being possible to roast them in a frying pan? and you have to listen out for cracking sounds apparently. lavazza (sp?) is nice but i usually end up going for the bag of beweleys no 3 strength which is all they have in the centra across the road and i have to buy it or else walk for miles to get coffee for breakfast. i never think to buy it until after ive run out.

today i visited a coffee specialist with a small stall in the georges street arcade where he sells a variety of coffee making devices. He had no ibrik to sell me (i dont think he had any vacuum pots either) and he advised me that my best hope of finding one was on ebay. there are a few different types available on ebay - this brass one-cup one for €5.50:

or this decorated brass 2-cup one for €10.50 which would be good size wise:

then theres this 3-cup copper pot which is lined inside with tin and costs €8.00:

the website (which has a silly animated talking shopkeeper) claims that the brass ones are healthier because its not as bad for you as copper and that the tin lining might eventually wear off the copper ones (into your coffee presumably...) so that would make a brass one seem like the obvious one to go for but i recall that the mothers brass pots and things at home were always kinda musty smelling and less than ideal for preparing coffee in.

anyone any thoughts on the suitability of brass for cooking stuff in?

Brass would have to be better than copper.

Copper conducts heat well, making it easy to control cooking temperatures. Brass, made from copper and zinc, is less commonly used for cookware.
Small amounts of copper are good for everyday health. However, large amounts in a single dose or over a short period can be poisonous. It is not certain how much can be safely taken each day.
Because of this, copper and brass pans sold in Canada are coated with another metal that prevents the copper from coming into contact with food. Small amounts of the coating can be dissolved by food, especially acidic food, when cooked or stored for long periods.
Coated copper cookware can lose its protective layer if scoured.
In the past, tin and nickel were sometimes used in coating copper cookware. Such cookware should be used for decorative purposes only. Anyone allergic to nickel should particularly avoid nickel-coated cookware.

Can you get stainless steel Ibriks?

if you are going to start thinking about forking out 300 euro for a grinder, I would just say fuck that, buy an electric stainless steel espresso machine, and buy good beans every week and ask them to grind them for you there. Then stick the coffee in the freezer.

We do that... it makes great coffee, and is no bother. You dont need to be fucking around with grinders and shit first thing in the morning.

You put the ground coffee inthe freezer -does that make much of a difference?

a friend of mine lives with a somalian girl who roasts coffee in a frying pan. I gave it a go once and used olive oil in the pan. Worked fine but i heard afterwards that you should dry fry it
