Sorry Ian
mmm i don't even think anybody said that in this thread..
annnnnyyyywayyyyy everybody likes samplers right?
I just listened to Polly Wog Stew for the first time in years there. Won't be doing that again in a hurry! Now to Dust off Paul's Boutique...
i've seen this and
YouTube - OutKast - Hey Ya!
this played on acoustic, both amazing.
YouTube - Warren G - Regulate
I think my main problem with some sample based music, is the main "hook" of a song is usually a sampled riff or line from someone else's record. I guess its more prevalent in RnB* Usher type shite.
Case in point:
YouTube - BOW WOW "BREAK IT DOWN"
*and don't get me started on how Rhythm and Blues evolved into a shorthand for referencing this shite.
finest moment. Do you have the 7" or 12"
if i'd been here for the fight i probably would have said that there really arent many instruments that offer the level of hands on expression that guitars can, the concpet of steel strung instruments is a long standing staple of any well established culture, although the guitar is only a few hundred years old, its the son of the on which the first things resembling contemporary songs where performed on, its a cousin of the sitar, the shamisen the oud and the banjo, cultures and kingdoms have come and gone during its history. i dont care what you say about sampling, it cant compete with the physical manipulation of amplified thin metal manipulated by both human hands. the only historical backing i can think of for sampling would be the grgorian monnks learning 80 hours odd of chants by ear. those guys are pretty hip, but at present the sample is a drop in the ocean, a young fad. when somone can control and express it at the level hendrix did then i'd give it more creedence
too late.
(btw, have you heard Donuts?)
what's the sample in that? are you sure it's a sample? there's a big move
away from sampling in the kind of stuff you're using as an example as it's
so cost expensive to get clearance on everything....and litigious if you don't
http://evilmonito.com/2008/12/16/is-sampling-dead/
c'mon ian, just say it - you don't like "them"
The guitar is a brilliant instrument. Loads of expression, tone, history, and a foundation in music composition. But put it in the hands of the wrong person, its torture.
The sampler is also a brilliant instrument. Incredibly versatile, it can be brass, strings, percussion, voice, whatever and can be used to improvise in the same way as any instrument/object. But put in the hands of the wrong person, and its shit device that just repeats 8 seconds of someone else's music for the duration of a song.
