Site design (1 Viewer)

I knew this would happen.

You don't never get nothing done by no committee.

Fucking communists.

Pete, see this? This is this. This ain't something else. This is this. From now on, you're on your own.

Its bullshit, someone should take charge.

Can someone post Johns logo as an attachment?

Ok, got the logo. I like it, now lets roll for fucks sake.

I am here. Sorry was busy. (By busy I mean forging a drivers licence for a girl at work)

There are a few things we need to get sorted out.

1. Name the site, by vote.
It's starting to look like "Don't hate the player" is the popular choice. If I'm honest, I don't like the name. It made me laugh the first time I heard it, but I think it sets the wrong tone. Yes, it is funny and ironic, but I think the irony will be lost on many people. To me personally it brings up images of Fifa Street/ghetto/thug/pimp my ride kind of stuff. I know it's ironic, but I don't think the irony is so easy to translate.

I'm unsure where I stand on the abbreviation. Ytmnd is a very popular website, so a similar naming convention hasn't hurt them. The content of that site is unique though, while we are looking to put something together that is already common on the net.

All I know is that if someonen said to me "There's a new cool site out about games and it's Irish", then I'd give it a looksie. If I was told "It's called Don't Hate The Player", I'd immediately think I should give those 50 cent fans a wide berth.

2. Who owns what?
A friend of mine started a web business with 2 of his best mates he went to college with. He doesn't talk to them anymore.

We need to sort who owns what and draw up some sort of paperwork that states this. It goes without saying that there is only a slim chance the site will be uber successful, but what if it is? Does the guy who registered the domain get to sell the site and fuck everyone else over? Not many of us have met in real-life and while most of us talk regularly to eachother, we could pass eachother in the street and not know it. If someone turned around in a years time and said "Love the site, here's xxxx grand for it" then we could be entering a world of pain.

I'm laying my cards on the table here. When I found out Thrillo registered irelandspwned, I was taken aback. Regardless of the motivation for doing it, it didn't feel right to me and I know I'm not the only one who feels that way.

3. Who does what?
While it'd be ideal for all of us to be on an equal footing, in reality it's not going to work. We can't agree on a site name - so what happens when someone puts together an article that splits the camp. Someone has to have the final say, so we're gonna need an editor. At the very least, we could have a different editor each month or something, but someone is gonna have to be in the chair should decisions need to be made.

Point 1:

If I'm honest I don't really care about the name. Don't hate the player was the first one to make me laugh out loud. I can see your concerns though, and the porn site is a bit dodgy too. As I've already said, I'm not a fan of iplaygames, but I'm willing to go along with whatever the majority wants to do.

Point 2:

Again I understand your concerns, but I'm not really sure of the way forward. If we have a contract, it's dependent on people pulling their weight. I'd llike to think that I could trust everyone here to be honest, all I want to do is post a few stupid articles on a site.

Point 3:

Democracy never works. It was your idea Johnny, so if you ask me you should be the man in charge. Unless you don't want the job, then someone else should come forward.

In general I just want to post a few articles a week that I think people might find funny, and then have a bit of a online discussion about it.

Yeah, this is all fair enough. Once we get all this shite outta the way we can start pumping the content out.

Regarding the domain name registration - these days most of the good / obvious domain names are gone. If you think of something good you better register it immediately because it'll probably be gone tomorrow.

Unless you're already a company, a domain name will always be registered to a specific individual. That's just the way it works. The only reason i saw it (irelandspwned) was gone was because I was going to nab it first before someone else got it / thought of it / overheard it.... it's a jungle out there.

As for the dhtp domain(s) - if they get used for this, then great. If not, then no problem - i'll just keep them for something else.

On the editing side of things, it might be best to keep it that everyone owns / is responsible for their own material - this might remove the need for an editor completely. I really like the fact that Edge never credits its writers, but I don't think that'd work for this shit.

It's kind of funny to be even considering money issues, but if there's more than one person involved then really it just has to be done. And it's not even at the "what if the site really takes off and UGO want to buy it out?" level.

Say - hypothetically - an offer of an all-in trip to a games show came up. What then? Or a free console? Or free games? Or an advertising opportunity? Who gets this shit? How is it divided?

Similarly to stan, the name/design isn't massively important to me.

I'm not sure about the ownership side of things, maybe everyone should own what they write for a month or two then a decision can be reached on how to divide up the site between us based on how much time and effort each person is putting into it?

I love the idea of a different editor every month but I think its only right that Johnnyc has the overall final word, it was his idea. It should be a democracy with a dictator.

Pete raises some good points there. Maybe a hierarchical system is the only way.

I think an editor is an absolute neccessity if we're to take this seriously. Giving every writer responsibility for their own articles is a nice idea in theory, but absolutely unworkable in practice - not everyone writes at the same level, and some of the best pro writers I know still benefit from judicious editing.

Quite aside from pruning, re-shaping and tweaking work, we'll need someone to weed out typos at the very least.
