RADIKAL GURU

Mateusz Miller aka Radikal Guru is a producer and dj born in northern Poland. Based in Cork IE Guru has been setting up dancefloors around Europe with some of the heaviest dubstep beats coming out of the country. Heavily influenced by dub originators such as King Tubby, Scientist or Lee Scratch Perry, Radikal Guru produces sounds of roots reggae combined with dubstep.
Started in 2004 from making trip-hop, electronica and jungle beats he developed his sound by experimenting with ethnic sounds of Middle east and India. In 2005 Radikal collected enough material to put it on a demo album called “The East-West connection” which started spreading around internet community.
After moving out from Poland to Ireland his sound progressed even further. He discovered the world of dub music and it’s wide range of sub genres, including dubstep. In October 2008 he signed a record deal with Z-Audio and released some of his music with Dubbed out records. He’s first promo release was a dubstep remix of a legendary Max Romeo’s “Chase the Devil” which recieved a great response from listeners.
“He’s cracked out the old ‘Chase The Devil’ sample from Max Romeo & The Upsetters, perhaps better known as the centrepiece to the Prodigy’s ‘Out of Space’, and spooned it into a community centre wrecking dubstep anthem like no other”- Boomkat.

One has experimented with combinations of psychedelia and hip hop. The other has experimented with hip hop while on combinations of psychedelics. Edan and Ricky Powell may come from very different ends of the hip hop spectrum, but both have perfected their unique brand of old school homage. This winter, Five Day Weekend proudly presents the merger of these two creative forces for a strict limited series of showcases.
For the last two years Edan Portnoy has been a recluse. Toiling for hours over reel to reel masters, multi-tracks, various avant-garde instruments, and recording equipment. His detail-obsessed vision birthed, “Echo Party”- a 30 minute journey through the cocaine-fueled hip hop party scene of the 1980s.
Ricky Powell partied through the cocaine-fueled hip hop scene of the 1980s. He also happened to have a camera with him as he did it. Sometimes known as the fourth Beastie Boy, the lazy hustler, and the doloist, Ricky has been entertaining culturists throughout the world over with tales and slideshows of debaucheries involving everyone from Warhol to Joe Namath. Ricky is a man that lived it and captured it.
Five Day Weekend has packaged both of these very entertaining and talented artists together for a very limited series of tour dates. An evening which is both stimulating to the eyes and ears – and depending on whether these two have showered or if Ricky beasts your girl from you, more senses and emotions could be touched.
So what can you expect? Audience members will be treated to a visual accompaniment of Edan’s “Echo Party”, a video interpretation of his new project – directed by Tom Fitzgerald. Immediately following the Echo Party video, Ricky Powell will host a slideshow of his 1980s New York City street photography, complete with Dean Martin-esque commentary and delivery. Finally, the party people in attendance will be treated to an interstellar throwdown of vinyl manipulation from none other than Edan the DeeJay himself. So there it is people… Prepare yourselves for an ‘echo-sclusive’ evening of lo-brow, hi-fi entertainment!
