Is is the general consensus that Kerbdog were good and Wilt were not so good? Wasn't the lineup for Wilt the same as the lineup for Kerbdog except for the bass player?

Does this suggest that the bass player was the reason Kerbdog was good? Did Kerbdog have an extra guitar player or something during their early years?

No, the reason that wilt was shite compared to kerbdog was that it was battle trying to write pop rock tunes, which was his stated aim from the beginning of wilt.

As for the extra guitarist, his name was Billy Dalton and he was only on the first album. I interviewed Darragh a few years back and he said billy would get incredible stage fright, and forget all the songs as soon as he set foot on stage, sometimes even forgetting how to play the guitar. He was saying for ages he'd quit so when it came to On The Turn he said cheers and they became a three piece.
