I'm innerested in getting music ideas for a new film and welcome suggestions from films old 'n new.

Just watched 'I heart Huckabees' and the soundtrack is weapon. By a guy called Jon Brion (who also did Eternal Sunshine..)....

Most Irish film composers suck...except me 'cos I only do Orla Walsh films. Any other film music composers on Thumped??

Did Orla Walsh make a short film called "Blessed Fruit". It sucked donkey balls. Was she also involved in that cack "The Big Bow-Wow". That was a seriosuly bad show. If she's the person you work with, then you deserve my sympathy.

apart from the stuff mentioned, krystof komeda done some good soundtracks for some polanski films; cul de sac, fearless vampire killers, rosemary's baby etc....

didn't todd solondz use a similar tune to that of the rosemarys baby main tune in palindromes? sounded like it anyway...

ja, watched The Warriors again last night and the soundtrack is indeed deadlee. Esp when the Baseball Furies are chasing the Warriors through Central Perk.

Bullit. All time number one. Lalo Schifrin at his best, I've always reckoned.

Also, Roy Budd's Get Carter theme is pretty damn fine too, although there's a few duff tracks on the OST ("How About You?" just fails to ring my bell).

Nope. Dervla Walsh is your woman there.
:)

All time fave: Assault on Precinct 13 (finally got a remastered 180g vinyl copy of this a couple of year back).
Followed by:
Halloween
Bladerunner
Dirty Harry

I find most soundtracks don't work so well away from the films and I reckon that Tarantino soundtracks are a bit of a cheat because they could just be '70's compilation albums.

Bitching aside, here's me faves

Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory
Being John Malkovich
Ravenous
Magnolia (the Aimee Mann songs and the Jon Brion score)
I Heart Huckabees/Punch Drunk Love (also Jon Brion, check out his solo album Meaningless which is good).
The Empire Strikes back (the weird music when the AT-AT's approach!)
Midnight Cowboy (a Groom favourite)
Jaws (theres more to it than that cello bit)
Ordinary Decent Criminal (a shit film but Damon Albarns score is great)
Get Carter
Taking Of Pelham 1-2-3
Fargo/Barton Fink (Carter Burwell, I think)
Delicatessen
Alien (Jerry Goldsmith, if memory serves)
Halloween/Escape From New York/The Thing (John Carpenter)
The Fog Of The War (Philip Glass)
The Silence Of The Lambs (Howard Shore)
Raiders Of The Lost Ark (John Williams)

Better stop, I could go on all day!

ever notice how all comedy films seem to have shit soundtracks? can anyone think of a deadly comedy with half decent music that isn't pop punk etc

Fletch
Beverly Hills Cop
[edit] and There's Something About Mary.

comedy, random top of the head:
- animal house
- footloose (kinda comedy)
- caddyshack
- ghostbusters
- goonies

there's loads, unless you're only thinking of american pie et al

Nice one Wilbert. Good to see someone else with 'Taking of Pelham 1-2-3' in their list. Took me years to eventually hunt that awesome soundtrack down.

Anyroad:

The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3 (all time favourite soundtrack)
The Crow (best Cure song ever on that one)
Judgment Night (Shame the film is soooo shit and the soundtrack barely used)
Zabriskie Point
La Vallee (Obscured by Clouds) - Pink Floyd.
More - Pink Floyd.
The Changeling (scariest film ever IMO, and a soundtrack to give you the willies each and every time)
Halloween 3 ('have a happpy Halloween, Halloween, Halloween. Have a happy Halloween, Silver Shamrock!')
Assault on Precint 13 (also got that vinyl last year!)
Blade Runner
Danny The Dog/Unleashed (really underrated Massive Attack score)
The Filth and the Fury
Saturday Night Fever
Ghosts of Oxford Street (Tom Jones, Malcolm McLaren, Happpy Mondays, Sinead o'Connor etc..)
24 Hour Party People
The Harder it Comes
Trainspotting
Get Carter

and I'm sure there's loads more but no time I have...
