what makes a good film score? (1 Viewer)

I'm into scores that create atmosphere and encapsulate the movie's theme or subject within a few movements. Stuff like:

Yann Tiersen - Amelie
Danny Elfman - Batman
Michael Andrew - Donnie Darko
Angelo Badalamenti - Twin Peaks/Mullholland Drive
Nathan Johnson - Brick
Yann Tiersen - Goodbye Lenin

I don't think it matters that the score works on it's own. All that matters is that's it's suited in the context it's used. I wouldn't listen to Mark Mothersbaugh or Jon Brion scores outside of the films they're used in, but they're an integral part of the mood or atmosphere within the films, particularily Brion with Eternal Sunshine.

Last score that impressed me was last night when I re-watched Undertow - Philip Glass just got that right measure of ominous mood without laying it on.

brion, elfman, glass, andrews, williams, tierson are all amazingly talented.

and john carpenter is perhaps as good a film scorer as he is a director.

Just found out that there was a different score for 2001: A Space Odyssey! Can't imagine it without Strauss. Apparently the bloke that composed the original score was devastated by it being replaced. Must get it and have a listen.

Classical music wise, there was a film I remember about this fella that deserts from the army and has a romance with this woman. There's either very little or no talking in it. The music is beautiful. There should be an audio google that you can hum a tune into a mic and i'tll tell you what it's called. *
