having ennio morricone or thomas newman at the helm would help I think.

personally I like strings, orchestral stuff, that kind of thing. we have had film score/soundtrack threads before but I thought it would be interesting to discuss what it is that people like about certain scores.

some wouldn't work independently of the movie, but there are those like the mission, shawshank and sense and sensibility that are just really nice to listen to simply as great bodies of music.

for me, a good score has to have depth and resonance, but ultimately it has to sound good when you take the visual accompaniment away.

At least 1 main theme you're gonna remember for the rest of your life.

failing that something odd like the music to Finding Nemo which is a a bit amazing

it's funny cos listening to shawshank for instance doesnt really make me think of wrongful imprisonment and beautiful friendships.

i guess those thoughts creep in, but there's alot you can take from the music. personally it makes me think of sitting by a lake in the canadian wilderness...

a good film score is one which you dont notice is there.

or(CONTRADICTION)

a good film score is one which becomes as big a factor in steering your emotions as the actors, script, cinematography etc.

i want to be a good film scorer.

both valid, i'd personally go for the latter.

"film scorer" would be a cool thing to write in the occupation part of application forms

John Williams. Listening to the soundtrack for Star Wars on headphones blew my mind. You can hear loads of mad stuff that you miss otherwise.

A good film score is uaually about 7 out of 10 or higher.

Other than that, yeah, John Williams (but they can be quite intrusive - great themes though) or Ennio. Or the classic late 70's synths of John Carpenter.

Or Grosse Point Blank.

Or, ah, there's millions.

Or Ryuichi Sakamoto.

Or Gabriel Yared.

Or....
