gerrard used to be more of a keane type player didnt he though? doesnt he play in that position for england?

nah. early in his career he did but since around 02-03 he's been out and out attacking. the problem with england is that him and lampard basically play the same position and no one's had the balls to drop lampard yet. hargreaves or carrick holds for them.

In his early days he was much more defensive, actually started out playing at right back for Liverpool in his very early days, but he hasn't played that defensive role at all since Rafa came in - after a few matches reckoned he wasn't discipled enough positionally or in the tackle. He seems to much prefer going forward anyways. I actually think that with the right parter(s) in midfield gerrard could have been one of the best box-to-box midfielders going but that doesn't seem to be possible these days, certainly not in English football, the game just moves too fast. I think he is limited positionally and mentally isn't strong enough - seems to disappear in some matches. But when he is given a central free role with the right team around him he can be great. Having Mascherano and Sissoko means neither Gerrard nor Alonso should have to play the defensive role very often anymore. Mascherano looks like being an animal bit of dealing by Rafa.
