Anyone have one of these things? They look the job for playing videos, especially HD ones. What's the compatibility like with a standard 720p x264 rip that are around?

I've got the Live one.
It's great - handles everything. Great quality picture.
You can't go wrong.

I've got an xtreamer (http://www.xtreamer.net/xtreamer/features.aspx) and it plays everything I can throw at it. I think the xtreamer is slightly better in the file types it'll play (mostly variations of mkvs with different audio encoding). One down side is the noise from the fan on it, i did a diy mode on mine and plonked a hard disk fan on the side but they have a pre-made heatsink that you can attach to each side of the unit (called the sidewinder). My most common way of playing files is laptop --> (wireless N) --> Router --> Wired --> Xtreamer and it handles 720p/1080p with no lag whatsoever.

Only thing I'd be a bit cautious about the WDTV is that it's by a 'proper' company and firmware updates might not be so often whereas alternatives like the xt, popcorn hour, etc can get any codec type updates fairly quick.
