The first Popical Island album of 2012 will be from the wonderful Walpurgis Family. The album, called "Dawn" is out on Jan 28 and will be launched in Crawdaddy with support from Boa Morte and Jonny Fun and the ...Hesitations. More about that later: right now, here's a track from the album. “Let’s Go Camping” is a dark slice of folk pop.

Here’s something really special. The first Popical Island release of the year is a work of real depth and clarity by the ever-melodic Walpurgis Family, entitled “Dawn”.

The second full-length by this Belgian/Irish three piece, the Walpurgis guys tell us that this album circulates around the theme of emerging light after prolonged darkness. Wow, heavy stuff, Walpurgis Family, you seem like such breezy fellows...but yes indeed, who but the Walpurgis Family could write songs about domestic violence, mentally-disturbed children and lost friends and turn it into the sweetest indie folk you’ll hear this side of Mt Eerie.

From the exhilarating Simon Smiles to the quiet sadness of Sherlock Holmes of Kilronan, the guitar chug of Let’s Go Camping and the delicate wistfulness of Jurassic Park, this is a fully realised journey of an album.
