UN says eat less meat to curb global warming (1 Viewer)

did you post that research of yours here?
also i'd be curious to see what the contribution vegetable and biofuel farming is having on the environment too.

biofuels is a sepeate issue. To keep it simple. Chopping down rainforests in asia to grown biofuels to power cars in europe is bad. Lots of people/government are realising that now.

In terms of food research my first stop is the Food Climate Research Network. http://www.fcrn.org.uk/

This is some of the stuff they have on fruit and veg

there is a dodgy link to on of the fruit and veg papers - this one works -

thanks for that.
interesting to see the section on energy and greenhouse emissions produced by fruit and veg production is negeligible in terms of other forms of food production BUT they acknowledge that that is down to people eating less fruit and veg than other foods and that if people switched to more veg then there would be a dramatic increase in emissions and land required to meet demand.

So it is possible that encouraging people to eat less meat, if more took up veg then we would be looking at an almost comparable level of emissions to that of meat production based on intense farming (fertilisers, etc) to provide large stocks of supplies. You'd then have to convince the majority if not all of farmers to go fully organic to cut down on these emissions. They would concievably lose up to 50% of their harvest on a bad year from pests so the shore up of stock would have to be taken in from somewhere. abroad?

personal allotments and small farmholds might fill the gap when large supplies are short based on a bad crop but thats debatable.

Its going to be very difficult to target agriculture especially if you have to convince people there may be a shortfall in food supplies in any given year. Look at how cereal gets hit in the increasingly bad weather.

I'm working on a polytunnel made from old shopping bags that will run the breadth of the country. who's on for giving a hand? should only take about 10years if we have about 100 people in each county armed with a hot iron.

Unless you're willing to make sacrifices as large as mine,
we don't stand a chance.

Could we not just stop stupid people breeding, unless they're exceptionally good looking? (Then they can breed with the really ugly clever people). Oh but then we'd have to find reliable ways of measuring intelligence and beauty. Never mind.
