A bus has left Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistani-controlled Kashmir, carrying passengers bound for the Indian side of the territory for the first time in nearly 60 years.

The bus, part of a historic service linking the Himalayan region divided since 1947, was carrying 30 people heading to Srinagar, the main city in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

It left after a ceremony that included a reading from the Koran.

About 30 minutes earlier, another bus left Srinagar with passengers travelling to Pakistani Kashmir.

The resumption of the service will allow families that have been separated by the long conflict since 1947 to meet up again.

It was not affected by a militant attack in Srinigar yesterday on a building where the first group of passengers was waiting.

Two rebels were killed but no civilians were injured in the incident.
