THE WEDDING PRESENT --- Cork Gig (1 Viewer)

The Wedding Present - Press Release

Emerging in the wake of the Smiths' demise as the U.K.'s most successful indie-pop band during the late '80s, the Wedding Present were founded in Leeds, England in 1985. Formed from the ashes of the short-lived Lost Pandas, the Weddoes (as they were affectionately dubbed by fans) were essentially the vehicle of singer/songwriter David Gedge.
the fledgling band quickly won a loyal following among university students, as well as the patronage of influential DJ John Peel, for whom they cut their first radio session in February 1986.

Named in honor of the popular soccer star, George Best, the Wedding Present's remarkable debut LP, appeared on their own Reception label in 1987. The group became the darlings of the British press overnight, winning acclaim for their distinct guitar-pop frenzy as well as Gedge's idiosyncratic vocal style and wittily lovelorn, conversation-like lyrics. After the album established a foothold on the U.K. indie charts, Tommy -- a hastily compiled overview of early singles, covers and radio broadcasts -- followed in 1988.

The Wedding Present's next effort came completely out of left field: titled Ukrainski Vistupi v Johna Peel, the collection brought together Peel session dates with a sampler of traditional Ukrainian folk tunes

After reaching the Top 40 with the primal single "Kennedy," the Weddoes returned in 1989 with Bizarro, a more conventional effort highlighted by the single "Brassneck," produced by Steve Albini. 1991's aggressive Seamonsters returned Albini to the producer's seat.

All three songs were written by David Gedge and Simon Cleave, and recorded in Seattle by Steve Fisk, who also produced The Wedding Present's Watusi album a decade ago. i memember i went to see them in the sfx a couple of days before my leaving cert started. went on my own. buffalo tom supported. it was the sea monsters tour. one of the best gigs i've ever been so, seriously intense band when the mood grabs them. and then i saw them in wakefield rooftop gardens a few months later... was on holidays in the moors with my dad and he came along and stood at the side... i think he said something like... "that's very morose music... you probably shouldn't have given up playing rugby you know..."

:D

how it will beat Cinerama in Spirit I don't know.
Was anyone else at the Wedding Present during the opening week of the mean fiddler? Me and the wan were totally buzzin on Watuzi since we'd met and then they played a whole watuzi section and it were very special so it was.

Yeah that was an amazing gig all right...

Im a bit weirded out by this whole weddos thing...

Sure cinerama have been including weddos songs in their sets as of late...
but cinerama touring AS the wedding present seems a bit odd to me...

Just Gedge...
Cleave joined making Watusi and stayed on into Cinerama...

Still cant complain, Robert Smith has been doing the same thing for years...

ahem
that gig was May 15 1991 - more like three weeks before the Leaving Cert started (usually a Wednesday in early June)

Seamonsters was not released til the following Monday.

my college exams (Accountancy) in WRTC were starting a few days later I remember and I was under serious pressure but I went to the gig anyway.

Buffalo Tom were ace. Some mad mohawk guys moshing

I failed the exams, failed the repeats and my training contract with the Accountants was terminated.

it was 92, i did my leaving in 92 and sea monsters was definitely out or just about to be released. it was released august 6, 2001 in the uk. you're lucky the accounting didn't work out... for a couple of reasons. it actually could have been for my 5th year exams and then you'd be right. i was convinced it was my leaving year...

no. Seamonsters came out in May 1991

they released the twelve singles in 1992. One a month, remember?

this lists Seamonsters as June 1991 but that's wrong too
