whelanslive.com are proud to announce The Pop Group are set to perform live in Whelans this coming May along with a UK Tour. The dates follow the February 23rd release of their first album in 35-years, Citizen Zombie. Produced by the much-acclaimed Paul Epworth, a long-time fan of The Pop Group, the new album features original members Mark Stewart (lyrics / vocals), Dan Catsis (bass), Gareth Sager (guitar) and Bruce Smith (drums). The UK/Irish tour comes after March dates in Japan, New Zealand, Australia and North America culminating at SXSW.
The Pop Group formed in Bristol in 1977 out of a sense of disenchantment with the increasing conservatism of punk and released their Dennis Bovell debut album, Y, in 1979. Their second album, For How Much Longer Do We Tolerate Mass Murder? arrived in 1980 before the band imploded in the same year.
Reforming in 2010, the band have played festivals across the globe including Summer Sonic, Primavera and OFF, and recently completed a 7-date UK tour in support of the reissued We Are Time and new archival compilation Cabinet Of Curiosities in 2014.
