All of this duality-based stuff is only one possible way of thinking about it, though, and one that relies explicitly on superstring theory (which may or may not be true). And even in that context, it's only one of many possible explanations.
The simple fact is that we (meaning us physicists) don't know what happened before the Big Bang. Or at least, there's no single answer that even a sizable minority all agree on. (Some even think that the question itself -- specifically, the word "before" -- is nonsensical.) Basically, we need more experimental data before we can really make anything other than extremely speculative guesses.
