i like the oscillating universe theory, the universe expands to a point at which it begins to contract back to the singularity (big crunch) which causes the big bang again and repeats infinitely.

they'd say that because the universe is all spacetime, then we can't talk about what came 'before' the big bang, because the big bang not only initiated space but also time itself. you'd be left unsatisfied with their answer and they'd then start talking about quarks or bosons or some such shite.
