oyyy it's the beginning of the end

and the company / bloke what made this board software has vanished, so no support

ok should be fixed now

if anyone cares, the problem was caused by the Sessions table in the mySQL database - as soon as the 65,535th person logged into the board it shut down due to a bug in the software.

so i used the modren intarweb to figure out enough mySQL to clear the Sessions table, and now everything's back to normal.

until another 65,000 people login, that is.....
