Not there. There.
I read cannery row years back, one of the best reads i've read and yesterday i found a 1952 edition of sweet thursday, which i duly dove right into. So i read the prolougue and am pleasantly surprised to discover that it's a followup to cannery row. I did not know this.

But from what i can recall, the story in cannery row is very very similar to whats going on in Thursday. Is it a re-write? Or as mentioned in the prolouge, is it the same story but with more whoopdedoodle?

One of you fuckers must know.

I'm pretty sure it's a sequel.
Most of the characters in Cannery just hung out drinking all the time so that's might be why it seems like the same story. I think Doc might fall in love in this one.
I was a Steinbeck nut from about 14 -15. I read 'em all but i don't remember feeling Sweet Thursday as much as Cannery.

S'just that there was a suzy in cannery row too. I think. Meh, no matter.

Steinbeck was way ahead of his time. Did he ever run into trouble with McCarthy?

I don't think so, he would have been fairly respected and establised by the time mccarthy came along.
In Grapes of wrath he stood up for the little men pointed out how anyone who stood up for the downtrodden was labelled a red and a troublemaker.
Much later in his life he did a bit of viet nam journalism which is meant to be simplistic and all gung ho. That may not have been a contradiction for him though as he was all about loving america.
