my friend has a 30g ipod and wants to erase it and get stuff from my other friend's computer, but it won't synch cos it says 40g is required to fit it all in...
1) is there a way to synch without transferring all the 40g?
2) can she transfer some stuff selectively from itunes without synching?

thx...

Now I am confused because you all are making it sound difficult.

1. Erase the contents on the ipod.
2. Plug it in to someone's computer.
3. It will ask you if you want the computer to choose randomly.
4. Hit no.
5. Drag over the stuff you want and drop it on the ipod.

I thought the problem was moving files in the other direction, which can be annoying.

yeah, what hayworth said (except the bit about choosing randomly, sorry what?)

There is a prompt that comes up asking you if you want the computer to choose the songs from the music collection. I think it's based on how many times you've played a song, etc. Or you can choose what to put on it yourself. It always comes up on mine when I plug it into a new computer.

download an application like anapod from your favorite torrent site and it'll allow you to rip all the music off in a nice folder hierarchy. anapod may be mac os x only me thinks. on windows, you can pull all the music off it using winamp and the ml_pod plugin (winamp is the best way to manage music on the ipod if you're going to throwing music onto it from different machines & OSes.)
