The Four Tops. Deadly! Walk Away Renee!

Those records sounded so good. They are paced really well or something. Not that I know about these things.

I'm going through a Supremes phase for some reason.

My #1...

The Montt Mardié cover of this is deadly and the Japan cover is also pretty great.

I played the Supremes earlier. The kids loved it.

An Evening With The Supremes.

And did anyone see that Martin Freedman ion Motown documentary last night? I bleedin' missed it!

Too much awesomeness to choose from.

So just one sad (Eh, just listen, don't watch the video here - the guy who made it decided that the answer to the song's title is "They become homeless"):

Probably not my favourite motown song ever but one I've been listening to most these days is this

Big props to nlgbbbblth for Indiana Wants Me, I love that track .|..|

There's a great new 3 disc compilation that's just come out if anyone is looking for a starting point.

I was made to love her = one of stevies top ten.

I don't know why, but I have a deep-seated, unfounded hatred for Diana Ross. The Supremes were incredible, and so were a couple of her solo records but I just can't stand her. She spends a considerable amount of time sounding like a helpless child, which doesn't help. I'm reading a biography of the Supremes at the moment and it's already confounding all of my suspicions about her. That being said, 'The Boss' is one of my favourite songs of all time.
Here's a crap live version of it. (Sorry, it's veering away from the Motown buzz)

If you think the yearly singles boxes are overkill, there's a nice number 1s set out now.

caught some of it. The bit where he was talking to 3 of the lads out of the jackson 5. It was hard to watch with that haircut he has, but he spoke very well. Seemed very knowledgeable about what he was talking about.

anyway, possibly the most politically incorrect song ever (but great);

Yeah i saw it too, was pretty enjoyable alright, especially seeing the Funk Brothers playing again.

Ah Michael, it's heartbreaking.

Hey Niggz, can you recommend a good early soul (non motown) boxset?

Beg, Scream And Shout: The Big 'Ol Box Of '60s Soul

Unfortunately out of print so you'll have to look on the used market.
One track per artist. Amazing.

What It Is! Funky Soul And Rare Grooves

Collects Warner distributed stuff.

Atlantic Rhythm And Blues 1947 - 1974

The one that started it for me. Not strictly soul but great.

Take Me To The River: A Southern Soul Story 1961 - 1977

Just out.

You should watch "Stanging in the Shadows of Motown" - they all play a set together again.

Unfortunately the audio is squeaky clean and totally lacking in any of the motown grit, and all the guest singers are pretty lame, but the boys are all there. Well, the alive ones anyway:
