***SPOILERS*** Harry Potter - Last book & new film (1 Viewer)

Anyone else looking forward to the last book? I've queued at mid night for the last three and I'm re-reading books 5 & 6 at the moment..

New film might or might not be good.. I don't really know.. Though the Prisoner Of Azkaban was excellent with the dark turn it took but Goblet Of Fire was rubbish, cut loads of bits out, went way too fast etc

Well, I think I'm allowed this. I grew up with these books! I read the first one in 5th class for crying out loud.

I, however, do NOT dress up in any way, shape or form for it.

yes! i am really looking forward to standing outside at midnight, and i haven't done it before. secretly i am hoping that my mcgonagall-is-evil hunch comes to something, and a worrying percentage of my waking thoughts go on trying to guess how snape's story will unfold.

i'm the same with the films, but i'm going to see this one for umbridge alone. i've been listening to books 5 and 6 on my ipod at work ("what are you listening to? "oh, [LIES].") and the umbridge detention scenes still spook the fuck out of me so i am interested to see how she translates. and how annoying cgi kreacher is.

Graeme, you so crazy. I agree with you RE The Prisoner of Azkaban and The Goblet of Fire films though.

I forgot aboslutely everything that was in the fifth book almost immediately after reading it. I thought the sixth was a bit of a return to form, but no great shakes.

Yeah, I'm curious about it.

I've read a load of spoilers which have answered some of my burning questions so what I really want to find out now is how she resolves the house elf question. Becasue I get the nasty impression that that storyline with S.P.E.W and everything has as its moral that slavery is ok if the slaves don't know/want anything better. It also seems like Hermione is being set up for some sort of "comeuppance" in that regard and I don't think it's right to punish a character for just doing what she thinks is right, albeit in a slightly misguided way.

Yes, I have ruined all the fun of Haarry Potter for myself by taking at all too seriously and thinking about it too much.

lady, i'm with you on the last count. i'm obsessing a little about the policial and social implications of the architecture and food choices, down to almost contemplating getting the computer game to see if the (jkr-approved) castle is as i think it is.

as for S.P.E.W., i really got the impression that hermione is shown as being right (if a bit misguided in thinking she can make choices for the elves when it comes to the buried knitting), while everyone else can't be arsed (cept for lupin, who seems to listen, and i would speculate that their role changed more from slaves to servants - yeah, not great but - under dumbledore's reign). even when harry opens the package of maggots from kreacher, he's guilty thinking that hermione would have done the decent thing. it also appears that kreacher is going to have some significant role in 7, so at least the plot isn't entirely incidental. i think the way the 'good' characters treat hagrid, vs the malfoys' and umbridge's treatment of him, frames how the prejudice against magical creatures is presented to us, and that the role of the centaurs (bar firenze) is to show that they're formidable but not necessarily harmless.

im dying for the book..amn't getting my hopes up for the film..

last year i pre-ordered the book in reads with the old lowest price guarantee...so in i goes at midnight and buy it..walk up to easons like 4 doors up and it was a fiver cheaper..so i went back and gave out stink to yr man in reads who i always hated anyways..

whats extra good about it this year is that it will keep me entertained for my first 24 hours in the hell that is the gaeltacht..

I tried in vain to find the 6th book last night so I can re-read it before the 7th gets published - but I CAN'T FIND IT ANYWHERE!

I agree with you on the idea that "slavery is ok, so long as they don't know" is there in the books, but theres a whole thread running through them that is presented with Hermoine. When Hermoine is knitting all the socks and scarves and actively leaving them out for the house elves, they get horribly offended which Dobby tells Harry and they get offended enough to refuse to continue cleaning the Griffyndor rooms. It's seen more to them as a position of prestige than anything else (kinda like butlers seem themselves) and the rags and the clothes are their uniform of sorts. The conditions that Kreacher lives in are also reflective of the fact that he is quite insane.

I'm guessing he will be freed by someone, possibly even Hermoine, and will go to the next of kin o the family which he serves which is of course Lucius Malfoy's wife. He will reveal the location of the Orders headquarters to Malfoy (as he presumably is not under the terms of the Secret Keeper agreement that Dumbledore had on the house) and it will be raided by Death Eaters. Lots of deaths ensue.

could be. my alternative theory is that his history with the blacks, and his duty to harry, brings up information about something (possibly about regulus) that harry couldn't find elsewhere. but the reason i suspect he'll be significant is that there was an interview with the film people in which they said that the character JKR strongly suggested they didn't edit out was kreacher, and surely the role in my theory could be filled by someone else, so yours fits better there.
