brand new collection of material from irish electronic producer ciaran byrne on the irish based psychonavigation label, irish electronic music has really taken off in the last year or two and this will raise the standards yet again, this guy would proudly do battle with the likes of boards of canada or mouse on mars with his crunchy beat driven lush electronic sounds taking a leaf out of kraftwerks book of motorik beats, they say opposites attract and that certainly works here with the harsh beats perfectly complementing the lush synth soundscapes, yet another excellent piece of irish electronica and yet another truly fine release from the psychonavigation label too, if you are fond of the likes of the warp label, morr music, autechre, boards of canada, mouse on mars etc then this is pretty essential stuff, december 2006
psychonavigation cd €14.99

Have Road ever given anything a bad review yet?

My feeling on this is : If you check some Road records reviews they are very short and some are long.Think about it;)

Sounds like German employment reference letter protocol!!

Ciaran Byrne is playing along side Jimmy Edgar and David Bickley on Friday next (the 15th) upstairs in 4 Dame Lane. It's a free show and going to be a great night of music! Doors open at 8pm!

Road are great heads without a doubt, but they're no critics.

Taken from Norman Records mailout today. You got to love the humour;)

After that, it'll be hard to give Boards of Canada acolytes GALTRIM a glowing write up. This being primarily because they add nothing new to the sonic stew. In fact, they've just copied the recipe straight outta the "Scottish Hippies Guide to heart-bursting hazy chill out". Gotta hand it to them though. They are wonderful cooks, even though it's all stolen. 'Ciaran Byrne' is perfect for those hankering for Music Has the Right...pt 3 or whatever. I'd also truly recommend this to anyone who wanted to stab BOC up after the 'Campfire Fizzleth Out' or whatever the last slice of bland dross was called. Then Track 4 suddenly bursts out with this mangled robotic electro swagger, really playful & frazzled like a child that's escaped from it's bedroom in the middle of the night to go wandering in some spectral moonlit wood. Yes, this album may be occasionally carbon copy but definitely has many of it's individual glory moments! Also for fans of Arovane (we've been told...) CD only on Psychonavigation

Why on earth would they? They're trying to sell the records for Gods sake! Their reviews are just information for the buying public as to what the record might be like, with their own personal taste elevating certain descriptions. They're hardly going to be so thick as to say 'this record is one of the worst things to come out in a long time. Don't buy it - it's shit.'

And then have another sticker saying

'Oh hang on.. actually if you like this kind of crap then I guess it might be okay to your ears. Please buy this. Thank you.'

Stupidest thread ever.*

*(sorry for the anger, bad result tonight.)

Bad result or not for you to say its the 'stupidest thread ever' is a bit extreme:confused:

Have you not noticed the other shit that appears here?

;)

Here's another review of Ciaran's cd from the legendary Mixmaster Morris aka The Irresistible Force (Ninja Tune)

Dublin's Psychonavigation label are on a roll right now, with recent CDs from David Bickley (rather Tangerine Dream in places) and Electric Penguins (definitely balearic at heart) winning a lot of friends. Now Ciaran Byrne's debut which is definitely electronica with the chillout room in mind. Three tracks are full-on ambient including the beautiful Enoesque Curtain Moon', others have a selection of tasty beatage therein. If you like melodic electronica like BOC and Arovane then you will like this.

CIARAN BYRNE - GALTRIM (Psychonavigation)

Byrne's debut for psychonavigation crept out at the end of November - so quietly that Hotpress didn't even notice it. No surprise then, when we tell you that the music is intensely intricate electronica. Inspired (it says here) by the likes of Arovane and Boards of Canada (well, their gentler moments), this is a fine album. Sure, it could have been made any time over the last ten years and isn't re-inventing any wheels, but Byrne's ear for a magical melody sets this one apart.
Bravo.

That's what I'm saying. Rhetorical question.

too many people borrowing from boc its like they have creatd their own genre, be orginal make your own beats and stop jumpin on styles

Wow thats alot of artists your speaking about Diggidy!Shame on all them:confused:

Listen who cares if it sounds like BOC or anyone else.Plenty of bands copy others and i'm sure you have many of them in your cd collection!

As regards Ciaran's cd it does share similar comparisons to Boc but only on a few tracks plenty of other tunes are very orginal sounding..Take a listen you may even like it.

CIARAN BYRNE Galtrim (Psychonavigation) • When artists like Autechre emerge with a singular style, they leave a horde of clones in their wake (read: Arovane, Phonem, etc.), the latter, through diligence and creativity use preceding styles to develop their own distinct sound while not abandoning their influences. Dublin, Ireland based Byrne is easily a Boards of Canada fan; so much so that one might consider Galtrim a feat of reverse engineering.. Imitation is not necessarily a bad thing, as BoC has won over a following with their spooked-out melodies and haunting nostalgic samples. Where Byrne and BoC differ is that Byrne is a more accomplished keyboardist, hence more willing to go on melodic tangents that at times border on synth-pop. BoC on the other hand trumps him in the realm of beats though the latter does possess good rhythm structures, simply not as exceptional. If the listener is a BoC fan, particularly from the Music Has The Right to Children era, consider Galtrim a lost album. Differences between artists are hopefully indicators of stylistic independence instead of distinguishing characteristics where the copy is not like the original. Here’s hoping that Byrne’s future albums emphasize what makes the artist unique while leaving influences behind. (IK) • www.psychonavigation.com
