Hey, the speakers on my Marshal 5212 50w solid state combo have blown,
I want to order new ones but I've got one question for you guitar nerds -

The speakers are Celestion g12m-70 8 ohms, wired in parallel.
Does this mean I have to use 70w speakers or can I use anything over 70w?
That is all.

Anything over 70w is grand, in fact you should be able to use anything over 25w.

Yeah, I was wondering if I could use under 70w aswell,
is there any difference in sound using lower wattage speakers?
Should I try and get 70w or does it really matter at all?

You'll be more likely to get speaker breakup (ie distortion) with lower wattage speakers. It does seems strange to have such high wattage speakers in that amp. It shouldn't matter at all if the speakers aren't 70w as long as together they're over 50w.

However Marshall probably chose those speakers as they match the voicing of the amp, so you're probably best getting something similar. Have a look at this:

Yeah, was thinking it was something like that, any suggestions where to get speakers from?
I was looking at Ebay but I need a pair of speakers and it'll be hard to get the same ones so maybe Thomann.

I bought mine from thomann but with the exchange rate it's probably worth looking at uk places. I don't actually know any uk places that sell speakers although I think there's list of sites on here somewhere.

Oh make sure you get 8ohm speakers not 16!!

Emminence seem to be about half the price of the celestions on thomann but I dunno anything about their guitar range.

I'm thinking about getting a pair of these:

They're only 80 quid but got deadly reviews on HarmonyCentral.
I'm fairly sure they're compatible with my amp but would
anyone be REALLY sound and have a look to see?

Apart from their dubious SPL claims I've heard nothing but good things about the RedCoat range and this speaker should suit your amp just fine.
AFAIK they recommend that you use all 8 mounting screws because of the weight of the magnet, you're existing baffle board may only have four but it's no biggy doing the drilling.

It does feel great. I converted an old 15" combo into a cab with a new speaker. Next up is to build a cab from scratch, once I decide what I actually want. Think I'm starting to settle on a 2*12".

It worked! Just wired them up today and it actually made noises.
I really didn't think it was going to work, these things usually never do for me...!

Anyone know what to use to clean the pots?
There's a scratchy/buzzing noise that goes
away when I touch the bass pot so I'm pretty
sure it's dirty pots...?

Does anyone have any idea if I can use any kind of footswitch with the amp:
the one I have is a really shitty plastic and I want to use a proper metal one.
The footswitch has gain channel and reverb switches,
I want to get this one:

But I can't find if it will work in a 5212 transistor amp,
I asked on the Marshall forum but didn't get a reply.
If anyone can help that'd be deadly!
