Hi

Wondering what kinda set-up one needs to start using pro-tools for recording a band at home/in the studio....
What kinda sound card, mics/mic inputs do you need etc?
How much is pro-tools & where can ya buy it?

Any advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

To use Pro-tools you will need to buy either a Digidesign or M-Audio soundcard.

If you were to use a different program like Cubase, for example, you are not limited in your choice of soundard.

Any difference in sound between programs is 1000 times smaller than the difference moving one of your mics an inch or two.
Are you Mac or PC?
Cubase
Neundo
Logic
Garageband
Audacity
etc.
etc.

There's loads.

You don't really buy pro-tools - you buy a piece of hardware (an external soundcard like an mbox or a digi002 (there's one for sale on this forum)) and pro-tools the software comes with it (and will only work when the hardware is plugged in)

pro tools has that "industry standard" thing going for it.
As well as that, it's piss handy to use.

yea, the 'industry standard' thing seems kinda desirable & like you say its handy to use.

does anyone know what the difference is between 'home studio' & 'PRO' packages?

also, how much do ya think it costs?

Red Tape - i check prices & Cubase seems way more expensive than Pro-Tools ?

cubase is SHIT when exporting and keeping things to a grid and i mean SHIT

also clips things on export

uurrg

so whadda you recommend? pro-tools?
theres only 2 mic inputs.. is that not a bit shitty?

ps - k.l.h. is a KILLER !!!!! tune

Last but not least..
HOWMUCHYAWANNASPEND?

Exactly, that should be your first question and work from there.

Good mics will be a much better investment than choosing one brand of program over another.
Probably your best value option would be to get a soundcard that has multiple inputs+mic preamps/phantom power etc built-in or a Firewire equipped mixing desk. There are several on the market, it depends on your budget.....and requirements...i.e. if your 'band' is just two people with glockenspiels, then you won't need 8 inputs.

Like Red tape said there's a lot of questions you need to ask before buying anything. Your set-up should be tailored to how you'd like to work, how many inputs will you need, what do you already have etc.

If you're on a tight budget and recording live instruments, your money's better spent on the recording chain before hitting the digital world, things like mics/pre-amps/desk/monitors/recording interface and then lastly the recording program.
....and of course the quality of your actual instruments/amps etc, if you've just dropped 10k on recording gear but your guitar amp is a €20 5 watt battery powered amp...then you've miscalculated your spending...

...but it's all about the mics. !ironyyy
